Foodie Collection, a thriving food and beverage group in Thailand that owns Asia's 50 Best Bars Vesper and La Dotta Pasta, birthed a new baby, 4th Wall, located on the second floor of LUXX Langsuan Hotel on Langsuan Road. This cocktail bar on Laungsuan brought forgotten or lesser-known classics back to life in the vibrant city of Bangkok.
The name, 4th Wall, is derived from the world of cinema and theatre, which refers to an imaginary barrier between performers and the audience. Breaking the 4th Wall creates a greater sense of intimacy and involvement for the viewers, drawing them further into the story. This cocktail bar in Bangkok strives to embody this idea by serving classic cocktails and providing unpretentious hospitality in an intimate setting. Its goal is to blur the line between the bartenders and our guests, creating an experience that fully involves everyone who walks through our doors.
After entering through the front door, patrons will walk down a passage and discover a cocktail bar with retro elements that take them back to the Swinging Sixties, the era of the counterculture movement. If this bar reminds them of a franchise movie, Austin Powers (1997 - 2002), which heavily parodies iconic Sea Connery James Bond in the 60s, or famous vintage American television series, Bewitched starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Adam West Batman, or Stanley Kubrick's 1968 masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, they are not wrong.
The bar's interior design is a stunning reflection of the Mod architecture, the world of 1960s cinema and the golden age of Futurism. The intricate geometric patterns and bold colour choices create a striking contrast with the mundane world outside. The bar is a true gem and a testament to the power of architecture to shape the guests' experiences.
Laboriously researched and developed by Foodie Collection's Group Bar Manager Tom Hearn and Macc, Saharat Kaewkong, a multi-award-winning bartender and 4th Wall's Bar Manager, the drinks are here to please both cocktail newbies and connoisseurs.
The menu changes daily, allowing customers to try different classic cocktails every time they visit the bar. The menu is divided into categories including 1st Section, 2nd Section, 3rd Section and Staples. Additionally, the bar has slushy machines to achieve a truly retro vibe. The machine was invented in the late 50s and was heavily used among food and beverage establishments until the 70s.
The 1st Section of the 4th Wall menu is dedicated to long drinks, including Dom Pedro. There have been many versions of the Dom Pedro cocktail, both creamy and fruity with spices. The one showcased on the 4th Wall menu is the one with Cachaça, peach liqueur, port, and and lemon, topped with some boozy bubbles.
The 4th Wall menu's 2nd Section of the 4th Wall menu is a refreshing short drinks section. East 8 Hold Up is a classic in this section, comprising crisp vodka, zesty with a hint of vanilla Aperol, sweet pineapple, sour passionfruit, and tarty lime. This cocktail is a sophisticated and refreshing beverage that boasts a perfect blend of its ingredients.
The drinks listed under the 3rd Section of the 4th Wall menu are strong and spirit-forward cocktails. Tuxedo No.2 can be found here — Yes, there is more than one Tuxedo cocktail — which is basically similar to No.1, gin-based with a rinse of absinth and vermouth, garnished with lemon peel. The additional ingredients are maraschino and two dashes of orange bitters.
The Staples Section on the menu is a great place to find those classic cocktails that never go out of style. These drinks have earned their long-term spot on the menu, and drinkers can always find them whenever they're in the mood for a tried-and-true favourite.
The 4th Wall's Irish Coffee is a delightful concoction made from locally sourced coffee, Jameson Irish Whiskey, rich cacao, palm sugar, and creamy vanilla. The flavour profile varies depending on the coffee.
Frozen Watermelon Margarita is a refreshing and flavourful cocktail that's sure to please. Made with premium tequila, fresh watermelon, tangy lime, and sweet agave, this drink is the perfect way to beat the heat in the hot climate of Bangkok.
Drinkers, visitors and connoisseurs should take note that this establishment doesn't use fancy homemade or house-made ingredients. However, the freshness of the drinks at 4th Wall is maintained by using daily squeezed juices and made-to-order coffee and tea. In fact, these are the cocktail bars in Bangkok's most vital points.
With its meticulously crafted cocktails, inviting ambience, and top-notch service, the 4th Wall has the potential to become a renowned cocktail bar in Bangkok that is beloved by imbibers worldwide.
